Being A Boy
When Paul was 11, he, his parents and two sisters moved to Deeside, a town just outside of North Wales that he describes as "a horrible, horrible place... really violent with nothing going for it at all." It was there, a year later, that he first began to play guitar and even write his first songs.

School And The Birth Of Mansun
After leaving his Catholic grade school Paul went on to Wrexham Art College where he met Stove. Paul was eventually thrown out of the College - the faculty felt his idea of art didn't quite conform to its teachings (rumour has it that Paul's creating of his paintings with a ruler clinched it). Paul and Stove also worked together at Prism Graphics, where Paul was a photo retoucher. The pair would take their lunches at Chester's Fat Cat Club. There, they befriended a bartender named Chad, and the rest is history.

Spasm Of Identity?
The Paul the audience sees onstage is flamboyant, glammy, campy, confident, forgetful (lyrics usually spontaneously take on new forms) and almost brash. This is a stark contrast to the Paul fans meet backstage - a shy, quiet, humble young man who is often mistaken for being standoffish or aloof. He often seems troubled - shown both in his demeanor and his lyrics - and has been described on several occasions as a future rockstar-suicide victim. A group of fans in Thailand actually held an all-night vigil for Paul outside his hotel - praying that he not meet the same demise of heroes like Kurt Cobain (from Nirvana) or Richey Edwards (of Manic Street Preachers).
Although often quiet, Paul is not stranger to off-stage stereotypical rockstar behaviour. He and roommate Chad were once the subjects of a neighbours' petition to get them kicked out of the neighbourhood, citing "drink, sex and drugs" as the reason. In 1996 Paul and two members of Cast, with whom Mansun was touring, went on a spree of destruction in their Newcastle hotel, trashing their own rooms and any other ones they could get into. But Paul, the only one to get arrested, charmingly struck up a football conversation with the officers. They let him go.

Function vs. Fashion
Although Paul is known for his distinctive fashion sense, he claims his look is a product of practicality and who he is, and not (even though "haircut is far more important than music in Britain") who the industry wants him to be. He owns and wears countless army shirts "'cause their they're cheap", cuts the arms off them because he gets hot and admits he's only "half-hooligan" since he'll wear Adidas trainers and mascara at the same time.

From XTC To NWA
One thing Paul's music collection is not - predictable. "[People] expect us to just listen to David Bowie, XTC, Magazine all the time, but we don't, we listen to loads of stuff. Anything from The Velvet Underground right through to R'n'B stuff... when I was 18, all I listened to for two years was NWA, Ice T, Public Enemy, all that type of stuff, Fear Of A Black Planet, Straight Out Of Compton."
"We can't help but suck in all the different influences we've had and spit 'em back out again", he says, "but it's all sort of subconscious".
So what are his bottom-line favourites? Hard to say, but the three he always refers to are: Magazine (frontman Howard Devoto appears on 'Railings', a b-side on the 'Being a Girl' EP), David Bowie and late-'70s and '80s Prince.

Print And The People
Paul is frank and outspoken about his feelings on the British music press ("The NME and Melody Maker hate us and we hate them"). He refuses to read anything it writes about him, or the band, in any of the mainstream music papers opting, instead, to grant interviews with the fans - for their websites and fanzines.
Paul feels a real bond with the band's fans. "We're just the same as the people that are into us," he says. "There's no divide." The fans tend to be heavily into music, in general, with huge record collections and vast amounts of music knowledge. He recognizes and appreciates that, since the music press tends to shed less-than-favourable light on the band, if any, Mansun fans have to really make an effort and seek out the information they want. "I don't think that we'll ever pick up any fans outside of that," he says, "because, I think, [everyone else] just constantly reads that we should fuck off back to Chester."

Documentaries Are(n't) The Best
He may not be a fan of the music press but another medium - television - has always been an influential part of Paul's life. He credits his childhood love of The Goon Show and Monty Python as the inspiration for such subjects in his lyrics as eggs ('Egg Shaped Fred'), vicars ('Stripper Vicar' - and many more!) and chickens ('Take it Easy, Chicken'), and his love, since the age of four, of Doctor Who is quite apparent on both the artwork and the lyrics of Mansun's second album, Six.
He is a huge fan of sci-fi classics like The Prisoner and The X-Files. In fact, he once offered Stove ¡Ì1000 for his X-Files first-season box set. Stove turned him down.
Besides the obvious references to Paul's affinity for Sky News in 'Television' (although, yes, the reference to documentaries being 'the best' is sarcasm), his lyrics are riddled with TV references. To name but a few...
Captain Scarlet (from 'Moronica') - a character from a late '60s English TV show, 'Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons', which combines puppetry and sci-fi conspiracy.
Family Fortunes ('Lemonade Secret Drinker') - a TV game show.
Simon Templar (from 'Moronica') - the main character from a '70s English spy show called 'The Saint'.
'Frankie' Spencer ('Moronica') - from British sitcom 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em'.
Even when he's not watching, Paul always leaves the TV on. "It's like a background thing, like wallpaper... like an ambience to the room."

The Only Pureness Left
Paul describes himself as anti-political but does have very strong philosophical beliefs in both Marxism in its purest sense (the theory and practice of working class self-emancipation) and Taoism (the belief that one must follow the process of nature by which all things change for a life of harmony - see Chad's profile).

Paul's Only Love
Paul Draper's passion for his band is extraordinary. His life literally revolves around it to the point where he doesn't know if he could exist without it. "I've always thought that if the band ended I'd just fuck off and be a hermit. Never, ever speak to another person for the rest of my life. I'd just wanna disappear."
