Command ~ Commend
command와 commend는 어원은 같은 것으로 알려져 있지만 오늘날의 뜻은 매우 다르다. 공히 com(together)-mand(entrust)의 어원을 공유하지만 command는 <명령하다>는 말이고 commend는 <칭찬하다>는 말이다. command의 {mand}는 mandatory (명령의, 강제적인, 의무적인)이라는 단어에서 앞에 보이는 것이며 commend는 recommend(추천하다), a medal of commendation (훈장)등의 단어에서 관련어휘를 찾을 수 있다. command의 예를 크게 둘로 나누어 관찰해 보기로 한다.
a) He commanded his troops to attack.
b) I command you to leave the room immediately!
c) He commanded a regiment of soldiers.
d) He was an excellent physician who commanded the respect of his colleagues.
e) His nature commands respect
f) Jane commands several languages.

처음 세 문장 (a), (b), (c)에서는 <명령하다>라는 오늘날의 가장 대표적인 의미가 잘 나타나 있다. (a)와 (b)에서는 명령하다는 뜻의 다른 단어인 order로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있지만 (c)에서는 <지휘하다>는 의미가 있으므로 order로 대치할 수 없다. command는 주로 군대의 지휘계통에 대하여 하는 말로 order보다 구체적이라 할 수 있다. order는 이보다 일반적으로 폭 넓게 쓰인다.
(d)에서 (h)의 문장은 명령과는 조금 거리가 있다. (d)와 (e)는 <~를 받아 마땅하다, to deserve and receive as due>라는 의미가 보인다. (d)는 <동료의 존경을 한 몸에 받는 내과 의사>를 말하며 (e)는 <성격이 좋아 존경을 받는다>는 말인데 이때 동사 command의 특징보다는 command respect를 같이 연결해 외워두는 것이 좋다. command가 이런 의미로 쓰일 때는 그 뒤에 respect가 나오는 경우가 대부분이기 때문이다.
(f)는 또 다르다. 가장 흔하게 통용되는 <명령하다>와도 (d)와 (e)에서 보이는 <향유하다>와도 다소 거리가 있다. 차라리 <~에 정통하다, be knowledgeable on something, possess knowledge about something>의 의미로 해석해야 할 것이다. (f)는 <Jane은 몇 개 국어를 할 수 있다>로 해석해야 한다. 그런데 사실 이렇게 <~에 능하다, ~에 정통하다>의 뜻으로 command가 쓰이는 경우는 직접 동사로 쓰이기보다는 have a good command of의 형태, 즉, command가 명사형으로 쓰인다.
이처럼 자주 연결 상태가 고정적으로 나타나는 표현은 그냥 전체를 외워두는 것이 좋다. command앞에 왜 관사 a가 있을까 고민하지마시고 all of a sudden에서처럼 전체를 한 덩이로 생각하는 것이 좋다는 말이다. 물론 필요에 따라서 good을 remarkable, exceptional, excellent, great 등의 관련 형용사로 바꾸어도 된다. 또한 of 뒤에 나오는 말을 유념해 보라. 대부분의 경우는 언어에 대한 것으로 have a good command of English, have an exceptional command of Chinese처럼 사용할 수 있지만 위에서 보듯 학문분야나 이론에 대해 정통하다는 의미도 있다.
command뒤에 학문이나 언어에 대한 말이 아닌 경우도 있다. 다음을 관찰해 보라.
i) The house on the hill commands a fine view.
j) We were on the top of the mountain that commanded the valley below.
위의 예는 둘 다 <내려다 보인다>는 의미를 지니는데, 사실 어원인 <명령하다>의 뜻을 가만히 관찰해 보면 위에서 아래로 향하는 것임을 알 수 있듯, 실제 위치가 높아서 아래가 내려다보이는 경우에도 <~장소가 ~장소를 지배한다>는 의미로 쓰임을 알 수 있다. (i)의 경우 <언덕 위의 집이 내려다 보이는 경관이 좋다>는 말이며 (j)는 <계곡이 저 아래 내려다보이는 산 정상에 서있었다>는 의미임을 알 수 있다. 이렇듯 위치관계가 분명하므로 <산정상이 올려다 보인다> 내지는 <하늘이 올려다 보인다>에서처럼 위로 보이는 것에 대하여서는 command라는 말을 쓸 수가 없다.
이처럼 command는 매우 광범위한 의미 영역을 지닌다. 이에 비해 commend는 그 뜻이 다소 제한적이다. <칭찬하다>는 뜻으로 대부분의 경우 동의어인 praise로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다.

n) We commended your organization to Martha, who may wish to become a member.
(k)와 (l)에서 <칭찬하다>는 의미를 쉽게 찾아 볼 수 있다. <위원회에서 Ralph의 선행을 칭송했다> <부모가 학교에서 공부를 잘한 자기 자식을 칭찬했다>는 뜻이 들어 있다. 그런데 마지막 두 문장은 단지 <칭찬하다>의 뜻으로 해석하기 어렵다. <Walter를 귀 기관에 칭찬합니다(?). 좋은 직원이 될 것입니다.>이렇게 (m)을 해석하니 어색하다. 그런데 이 말을 잘 생각해 보면 <추천하다, 승인하다>는 의미를 볼 수 있을 것이다. 사실 <추천하다>에 해당하는 recommend라는 단어를 보면 commend를 거듭한다는 어원적 의미를 유추해 볼 수 있지 않은가? (m)에서의 commend는 recommend로 바꾸어 써도 된다. 이는 (n)에서도 마찬가지이다. <좋은 내용으로 소개했다>는 말에서 칭찬과 추천이 무관하지 않음을 알 수 있을 것이다.
이렇게 써 놓고 보면 command와 commend는 아주 먼 옛날 같은 어원에서 출발했다는 공통점, 즉 우리에게 불필요한 공통점 외에는 서로 다른 단어임을 알 수 있다. 다만 철자가 매우 유사해서 글로 쓸 때에 혼동을 일으킬 수 있고 또 발음에 유념하지 않으면 원어민의 웃음을 자아내는 원치 않는 결과를 초래할 수도 있다. 억지로 만든 말이기는 하지만, I command your leave는 떠나라는 명령을 하는 것이요, I commend your leave는 네가 <그 떠난 것이 잘한 일이다>라는 말이 될 수 있으니 오해의 소지가 있다는 말이다.
